When I was born, doctors told my parents that I would never learn to walk. Man, it’s a good thing I couldn’t understand what they were saying back then!
Today, I not only walk, run and do anything I want - I have also earned a 3rd degree black belt in jujutsu. This is mostly due to the fact that it never crossed my mind that I couldn’t.
Everybody knows that person who convinces themselves to get sick. In teh office a couple people might come down with a cold and that person says, “I just know I’m going to get sick.” What happens? They get sick.
Why? Because we act in accordance with our beliefs, and even our bodies respond to what we believe.
In martial arts if you want to hit someone really hard, you don’t punch at them - you punch through them. When you aim at another person’s body, your unconscious mind puts the brakes on to stop your fist where you intend to land. Just by looking past an opponent when you strike them will guide your body to punch further, harder, and faster. Your force can actually be multiplied.
This is a lesson to be taken to life. Let’s say that you are earning $50,000 per year and you’d like to earn more. If you believe that you can raise your income by %10 a year, you’ll look for opportunities to earn $55,000 and most likely stop there. However, if you believe that what you have to offer is worth millions, you might find opportunities to multiply that income.
In 1996, I was earning around $14 an hour, and thought that was pretty good. One day I ran into an old friend who had the same skillsets as I did who had signed his first six figure contract. it changed my mode of thinking instantly to “heck I can do that”. Within a months I multiplied my current income by 3 times. Three months after that - it went even higher.
What would your life be like right now if you could instantly triple your income? If I did it, so can you.
I’ve done the same thing! (Though I’ve always had both legs) It’s really a challenge of overcoming your environment and conditioning moreso than any “real” obstacles.
I’ve heard a quote that this really reminds me of… “It’s better to aim for the stars and hit the moon, than to aim for your grave and hit the mark.”
Try to be more than you think you can, and you’ll be amazed with what you can really do.
A great story!
